I took DS1 to his first dentist visit this morning. Mostly because DC requires a dental form for preschool. Who knew? But probably a good thing -- it forces slacker moms like me to actually bring their kids to the dentist.

This was a pediatric practice, so lots of toys in the waiting room and seating areas for parents next to the dental chairs. Instead of individual exam rooms, there was one big room two rows of chairs -- it reminded me of a beauty salon, except no huge mirrors. If you're a little kid, it probably helps to see other kids calmly getting work done.
There was barely any wait once I signed in. I'm quite pleased with them, overall.

I tried to prepare DS1 beforehand, telling him that we'd be staying home from school in the morning to go to the dentist, that he'll have to open his mouth nice and wide so that the dentist can count and clean his teeth. All went fine until the hygenist pulled out the tartar-scraping tool. DS1 took one look at the hook on that thing and clammed right up. In the end, the dentist took over while I and another hygenist held him down. Afterward, I tried to comfort him and said things like, "I know you were scared, but it didn't hurt at all, did it?" So hopefully things will go better in the future. I took him out for pizza for lunch, which cheered him up quite a bit.
