Nabi, who I got as a kitten in high school, turned 20 last month, and spent her birthday serenely sleeping the day away. Up until last week, she was doing pretty much the same: sleeping in our bed, tracking kitty litter all over the house, hanging out under the kitchen table at meal times looking for scraps, and generally getting underfoot.

On Saturday, she took a turn for the worse, and I took her to the emergency vet clinic late that evening. I went ahead and got her a blood test when it was offered, and in hindsight, I'm glad I did. Her kidneys were failing pretty hard. So at least I can pinpoint a cause for her death, and not be left wondering about it.

By Sunday afternoon, she was clearly in distress. Once again, I took her off to the emergency vet clinic, this time to say goodbye to her, but by the time I got there, there was nothing left to do: she was already gone.

Later, one of our neighbors came by. They had spotted me leaving the clinic on Sunday, as one of their cats had suddenly died, too. And as tempting as it is to find something else to blame for Nabi's death (maybe it was something the vet did on Saturday night! maybe the neighborhood cats got into something!) she was a very very old cat, and I can't really begrudge her the 20 years she got.

Rest in Peace, Nabi. You survived two cross-country moves, living with a hostile cat, and the invasion of your household by two small children. You were affectionate and patient, not to mention a good mouser back in the day. I will miss you. It's good thing you went deaf, because it means you can't hear the kids asking for a dog now.
