I can't seem to tell, either.
The other day, the short hair hyperthyroid cat was begging to be let in. I opened a different door to let her in, but even though I was only 15 feet away, she didn't hear me call her name and didn't realize the door was open until she turned and caught sight of me.
This explains a lot of her behaviors over the last year, particularly her complete inability to get out from underfoot. She's got a really annoying habit of standing right under me while I'm preparing dinner and tripping me up when I move.
She's turning 19 this May, so it's not really shocking that she's gone deaf. I'm just bemused that it took me this long to realize what was up with her.
